The motion was carried with 26 votes in favour (the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the Peasant Party (HSS) and the Pensioners Party (HSU)), five against (the People's Party (HNS) and the United Independent Lists (SNL)) and six abstentions (the Party of Rights (HSP)).
The deputies of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) walked out in protest, saying that the proposal was totally unacceptable to them.
The chairman of the Street Names Committee, Ivan Sikic, recalled that Tudjman had held a speech in that area on Palm Sunday in 1990 ahead of the first multiparty elections in Croatia.
Sikic said that the grassy space would be appropriately arranged as a city square within the next two years and that a monument to the first Croatian president would also be raised there.
