ZAGREB, Dec 7 (Hina) - The British judiciary on Thursday released
on parole Milan Spanovic, a Croatian Serb sentenced in absence in Croatia for
war crimes whose extradition Croatia has requested, until his right to be
retried in Croatia is clarified. The 44-year-old Spanovic was
sentenced in 1994 to 20 years' imprisonment for war crimes committed in the
Glina area in August 1991.
A court in Westminster postponed the next hearing for January 25 so
that the government could obtain the necessary information, said the France
Presse news agency.
Croatia has provided guarantees that Spanovic will be retried if he so
requests under the Law on Criminal Procedure, and that he would be provided
with all the rights to which a defendant is entitled.
