ZAGREB, Dec 12 (Hina) - The defence ministers of Adriatic Charter member states -- Croatia, Macedonia and Albania -- have welcomed a strong signal from the recent NATO summit in Riga, Latvia, that at its next summit in 2008 NATO will extend membership invitations to those countries that continue the necessary reforms and reach the required standards, the Croatian Ministry of Defence said in a statement on Tuesday.

A Croatian Defence Ministry delegation led by Minister Berislav Roncevic attended an annual meeting of the defence ministers of the members of the A-3 initiative in Tirana on Tuesday.

The three countries undertook to continue implementing reforms with a view to upgrading their defence systems and achieving NATO standards. They recognised the positive impact of their cooperation on the stabilisation of the entire region, committing themselves to strengthening regional cooperation, particularly through joint military exercises and training.

The ministers also welcomed the sending of invitations to Serbia, Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina to join NATO's Partnership for Peace programme and pledged their support in the form of exchanges of experience from defence reforms and personnel training.

The meeting was attended by Defence Ministers Fatmir Mediu of Albania and Lazar Elenovski of Macedonia and the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence for European and NATO Affairs, Daniel Fata.

Montenegrin Defence Minister Bozo Vucinic and Deputy Defence Ministers Enes Becirbasic of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Zvonko Obradovic of Serbia attended in observer capacity.

Croatian Defence Minister Roncevic also had bilateral meetings with his Albanian counterpart and NATO representatives, the statement said.
