Gordana Getos-Magdic not on hunger strike, her lawyer says

Autor: ;vmic;
OSIJEK, Dec 8 (Hina) - A lawyer representing Gordana Getos-Magdic on Friday dismissed as untrue the information that his client was on a hunger strike, while a spokesman for the Osijek County Court stood by his earlier statement saying that the information had come from the Remetinec prison in Zagreb where Getos-Magdic was in custody on suspicion of involvement in war crimes against Serb civilians in Osijek in the early 1990s.

"Gordana Getos-Magdic is not on a hunger strike, and I, as her lawyer, am studying the files that show that a series of omissions have been made in her court case. It is not clear, among other things, why she was transferred from the Osijek prison to Remetinec in Zagreb," Kresimir Krsnik told Hina.

The media received the information about Getos-Magdic's hunger strike from the deputy president of the Osijek County Court and spokesman for the court, Miroslav Rozac.

Rozac told reporters on Friday that Osijek County Court investigating judge Mario Kovac received a fax from Remetinec prison shortly after 1100 hours on Thursday saying that Gordana Getos-Magdic had started a hunger strike the previous day.

Judge Kovac received a letter from Getos-Magdic from Remetinec on December 4, in which she requested a transfer to a prison in Osijek so that she could be closer to her family and attend investigative hearings in the so-called Sellotape Case.

The defence team representing Gordana Getos-Magdic sent an identical request to judge Kovac on December 6, Rozac said.

Another suspect in the Sellotape Case, Mirko Sivic, has also been on a hunger strike, but not eight day as reported yesterday, but 18. Rozac said that the mistake was made because Sivic went before the Osijek County Court investigating judge eight days ago.

On November 24 the Osijek prison authorities informed judge Kovac that Sivic had been on a hunger strike since November 20, after which Kovac requested that he should be transferred to a prison hospital in Zagreb, which Sivic rejected in writing.

Rozac said that Sivic was taking only water and that he was under medical supervision.

If Sivic's health deteriorates, judge Kovac will order his transfer to Zagreb despite his refusal, Rozac said, adding that Sivic went on a hunger strike because he believed that there were no grounds for his detention.

Getos-Magdic and Mirko Sivic are suspected of the murder of Serb civilians on the bank of the Drava river in Osijek in 1991 and 1992. There are four more suspects in the case.
