The request was prompted by a proposal from the Osijek County Prosecutor's Office, which suspects Glavas of involvement in the murders of Serb civilians in the eastern city of Osijek in late 1991.
The parliamentary commission decided that an investigation into the case could be launched and that Glavas may be placed in custody for fear of tampering with witnesses and considering the gravity of the crimes he is suspected of.
The commission made the decision with only Ivana Sucec-Trakostanec of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) abstaining from the vote, while the rest of her party colleagues and Social Democratic Party (SDP) member Ivan Posavec-Krivec voted in favour. Pero Kovacevic of the Croatian Party of Rights (HSP) had left the session before the vote.
The commission postponed a debate on the request by the Zagreb County Court to strip Glavas of his parliamentary immunity so he could be put in detention in connection with the investigation into the Fehir case, upholding the DORH's view that Zagreb County Court investigating judge Zdenko Posavec should have filed a request for the stripping of immunity before the court made a detention decision today.
In May this year, Glavas was stripped of his immunity for the purposes of an investigation into the Fehir case.
Speaking to reporters, the HSP member of the commission, Vlado Jukic, his party colleague Pero Kovacevic and independent MP Slaven Letica described the decision delaying a debate on the Zagreb County Court's request as unacceptable. Kovacevic and Letica attended the closed session although they are not members of the commission.
The three MPs were angered by the fact that the commission had given the DORH priority over a court of law.
Asked by a reporter if he expected a protest rally by residents of Osijek against the detention of Glavas, Jukic said he did not believe so, but added that he would join such a rally if there were to be one.
