ZAGREB, Oct 8 (Hina) - Croatian Parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks told Croatian Television on Sunday evening that most people in Croatia hoped independence would bring the realisation of democratic visions of a socially just Croatian state which would be part of the European community of peoples.

Croatia is observing Independence Day today.

On 25 June 1991 the Croatian Parliament voted for independence, after which a three-month moratorium followed to allow the European Community to solve the Yugoslav crisis peacefully. Parliament adopted a decision on 8 October 1991 to sever constitutional relations with Yugoslavia.

Asked to comment on general indifference towards national holidays, Seks said one of the reasons was the fact that the dates of national holidays changed in 2000. "Some politicians changed the dates of national holidays because of their narrow-minded political objectives," he said, adding that this made most of the citizens indifferent towards national holidays.
