ZAGREB, Oct 13 (Hina) - This year's tourist season was successful and better than last year's, Croatia's Minister of Maritime Affairs, Tourism, Transport and Development, Bozidar Kalmeta, told the government's session in Zagreb on Friday.

In the first nine months this year, the number of tourist arrivals and overnight stays rose by three percent, with 9.2 million arrivals and over 51.7 million overnight stays.

Figures about financial yields are not still known but Kalmeta expects a higher income that last year's six billion euros from the tourist trade.

The government then adopted a report on the tourist results from this season and a programme for activities in this sector next season.

The Ivo Sanader cabinet also adopted a strategy for broadband Internet access until 2008 and the action plan for the implementation of the strategy in 2007.

Croatia currently has four broadband Internet connections per 100,000 citizens, or some 170,000 such connections. Its strategic goal is to ensure the penetration of 12 percent until the end of 2008, i.e. 500,000 connections, said Kalmeta.

Also today, the government drew up a bill regulating principles and conditions for voluntary work.

The government also greenlighted the sale of shares from the Split ironworks held by the Croatian pension insurance institute, approving the sale of 29,804 shares at the nominal value of 35.7 million kuna.

The tender for the purchase of the Split ironworks has already been invited.
