SARAJEVO, Sept 26 (Hina) - Serbia is responsible for handing over Bosnian Serb wartime military commander Ratko Mladic to the Hague war crimes tribunal because he is hiding in its territory, as authorities in Belgrade have clearly admitted, US diplomat Raffi Gregorian has said.

The second most wanted war crimes fugitive, Bosnian Serb wartime leader Radovan Karadzic, is not in Bosnia-Herzegovina, but he is in the region, Gregorian was quoted as saying by the Sarajevo newspaper Dnevni Avaz on Tuesday.

Gregorian, a political adviser at NATO headquarters in Sarajevo, warned that the network of supporters helping Karadzic to evade arrest was still active in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

He named Karadzic's wife, daughter and son as members of the support network, adding that they could travel around freely although they had been previously sanctioned by the international community, including the United States and the European Union.

I was very disappointed that they were again able to travel on vacation. They should not be allowed to travel, Gregorian said, adding that there was no reason for Karadzic's property, wherever it may be, to remain in his possession or in possession of his family, particularly in view of the fact that he had been convicted as a war criminal by a US federal court following a private suit brought by a group of women victims of war from Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Gregorian suggested that under present circumstances Bosnian authorities should ask Hague tribunal chief prosecutor Carla del Ponte to explain what more Bosnia-Herzegovina should do to meet the condition of full cooperation with the tribunal.

The absence of cooperation with the Hague tribunal has been the main obstacle to the country's admission to NATO's Partnership for Peace programme.
