NEW YORK, Sept 23 (Hina) - The Croatian Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, met NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer in New York on Friday on the margins of the 61st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The talks focused on Croatia's efforts to join the North Atlantic Treat Organisation as soon as possible and its expectations from the Alliance's forthcoming summit, scheduled to take place in the Latvian capital Riga in late November.

Grabar-Kitarovic emphasised that Croatia expected "a strong, clear and encouraging signal" from NATO regarding an invitation for the start of membership talks.

She presented the Annual National Programme 2006/2007 of the fifth cycle of the Membership Action Plan, and Croatia's NATO Membership Communication Strategy, which the government had adopted last week.

Grabar-Kitarovic reaffirmed her government's commitment to NATO membership as one of Croatia's strategic priorities and its determination to implement the necessary reforms successfully, saying that the government would step up dialogue with the public regarding all issues relating to the country's membership of NATO.

The minister highlighted the importance Croatia attached to its role in the NATO-led peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan with a contingent of 150 troops, policemen and diplomats.

Scheffer said that the Alliance highly appreciated Croatia's contribution to the Afghanistan mission as "an exporter of security."

Also on Friday, Grabar-Kitarovic attended a meeting of foreign ministers of American-Adriatic Charter member states (Albania, Croatia, and Macedonia). The meeting also involved US Assistant Secretary of State Dan Fried.

It was said at the meeting that the aspirant countries were making steady progress in their internal reforms, which is seen as crucial for Alliance membership.
