SPLIT, Sept 11 (Hina) - Representatives from Croatia and 13 NATO and Partnership for Peace countries pooled in the southern city of Split on Monday for a symposium on multinational police units in international peacekeeping operations.

The four-day event, organised by the Croatian Armed Forces' Military Police Department, was opened by the Navy Chief-of-Staff, Commodore Ante Urlic.

The purpose of the symposium is to expand the knowledge and skills needed in peacekeeping operations and to overcome problems in the functioning of multinational units reported during the service of Croatian military police in the UN peace mission in Afghanistan.

The military police chief-of-staff, Brigadier Ivan Juric, said that the experience of participation in multinational peace missions was excellent and that Croatian military police officers had received the highest grades.

The national coordinator for NATO, Pjer Simunovic, underlined the importance of greater cooperation on the part of Croatian troops in the multinational context through NATO mechanisms.

In doing so, it is important to meet interoperability criteria for the sake of greater efficiency, Simunovic said, adding that Croatia was making maximum efforts in that sense. In that regard, the Split seminar is of great importance for Croatia's external and security policies, Simunovic said.

In the next three days, representatives from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ireland, Italy, Canada, Hungary, Serbia, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, the United States and Croatia will discuss multinational military police projects, standard operational procedures of the military police, preparations for tasks and missions, and the application of international law and its implications in international peace operations.

State-of-the-art military equipment will be presented at the end of the seminar.
