Round-table debate held on convention for protection of human rights

ZAGREB, Sept 18 (Hina) - Judges and public prosecutors should apply the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms in their daily work and be additionally trained in this respect, a round-table debate concluded in Zagreb on Monday.

The debate addressed the Convention and its effect on the everyday work of judges and public prosecutors. It was organised as part of a EUR1.2 million CARDS 2003 twinning project, which is financed by the European Union for the purpose of training judges and public prosecutors.

The debate pooled about 30 representatives of the judicial authority. Croatian, French and Spanish experts presented their experience in the application of the Convention and its effect on legislation and everyday judicial practice.

The debate was opened by the state secretary at the Justice Ministry, Snjezana Bagic, who recalled that the screening of the policy chapter the judiciary and fundamental rights began in Brussels recently, and that discussing the Convention and the respect for the practice of the European Court of Human Rights and the European Court of Justice could be seen also in the context of drawing closer to the EU.

The round-table debate was organised by the European Commission Delegation in Croatia, the State Prosecutor's Office and the Judicial Academy.
