ZAGREB, Sept 18 (Hina) - Croatian Parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks and Bulgarian National Assembly Chairman Georgi Pirinski have agreed that parliaments have the responsibility to take the role of generator of the region's development and said the South Eastern Europe Cooperation Process (SEECP) should gradually take over the current role of the Stability Pact for Southeast Europe.

Speaking to the press on Monday, Pirinski said he and Seks talked about cooperation within the SEECP and the need for parliaments to take over, together with governments, the role of generator of regional development.

Pirinski, on a day-long visit to Croatia, also spoke of the transformation of the Stability Pact, saying it should turn toward the SEECP. Seks said both sides advocated such an initiative.

"We feel the SEECP should become institutionalised so as to gradually take over the role currently being held by the Stability Pact," said Seks. He announced for December 4-5 in Brussels a meeting of the SEECP troika -- former chair Greece, current chair Croatia and future chair Bulgaria -- with the European troika -- current EU chair Finland, former chair Austria, and future chair Germany -- to exchange views on said initiative.

Pirinski emphasised the need to intensify contacts with EU member states' parliaments and the European Parliament, and said Bulgaria was helping Croatia perform its duties as SEECP chair so that the presidency could be successfully turned over to Bulgaria next spring.
