Kraus went on to say that the leadership of the 200-year-old ZOZ, recently elected at legitimate and democratic elections, protested on behalf of all ZOZ members.
He claims that senior state and city officials have made it possible for a small group of former ZOZ members to register, contrary to applicable laws, their own association as a religious community and "close down the old Jewish school, and open a new one under their control".
Kraus claims that the group of former ZOZ members managed to gain financial help for the school because they were politically suitable.
He goes on to claim that Ivo Goldstein, president of the newly-established Jewish association Bet Israel, was also announcing the takeover of the Jewish day care centre using the same methods.
Kraus announced that he would send a protest letter to the Croatian government, the European Union and the World Jewish Congress and the European Jewish Congress.
In its issue of September 4, Jutarnji List daily ran an article headlined "Bet Israel takes over all activities of the Jewish Municipality", reporting that Bet Israel president Goldstein said that the takeover of the primary school was carried out in secret and in collusion with the city authorities so that the ZOZ leadership would not know what was going on.
According to the article, the Zagreb city authorities financed the new Jewish primary school with two million kuna and the school was opened by Zagreb mayor Milan Bandic on September 3.
