President Josipovic says Bosanski Brod refinery is serious ecological problem

Autor: mses
ZAGREB, Jan 28 (Hina) - Croatian President Ivo Josipovic has said that the oil refinery in Bosanski Brod, a Bosnian city in the Sava valley lying opposite the Croatian city of Slavonski Brod, is a serious ecological issue and that he hopes this problem will be solved soon.

During his visit to the southern Croatian area of Peruca on Friday, Josipovic was asked by reporters about his position on the issue of the Bosanski Brod refinery following reports about an explosion and fire in the plant and that three employees were injured.

The gas emission from the refinery has been polluting the air for some time, prompting Slavonski Brod residents to warn about this problem.

Since 2007, the owner of the Bosanski Brod refinery has been the Russian state-controlled oil company Zarubezhneft, which now sells its products in Bosnia as it has not yet met European Union quality standards.

Josipovic said that he had received messages in writing or by e-mail from worried Slavonski Brod residents and had therefore met for talks with the owners of the Bosanski Brod plant last year, who had promised that they would upgrade "the ecological and technological aspect to the highest level" this year.

The Croatian president said that problems in the refinery were objective.

President Josipovic will receive Bosnia's three-men presidency in Zagreb on Monday and Tuesday and the Bosanski Brod oil refinery is expected to be one of the topics of their talks.

Following the fire-related accident in the refinery at 0900 hrs today, the Croatian environment, construction and zoning ministry said that it was monitoring air quality in the eastern Croatian city of Slavonski Brod.

At 1000 hrs today, the concentration of sulphur dioxide was 40.4 micro-grams per cubic metre and has not shown trends of increasing.

A critical level for people's health is 500 micro-grams per cubic metre if it occurs in such amounts in three consecutive hours.

Results of measuring of hydrogen sulfide from 24 January to 1000 hrs today show the concentrations ranging from 1.2 to 6.3 micro-grams per cubic metre, which is within the acceptable amounts.

However, increased amounts of hydrogen sulfide have been recorded three times in January so far.

Also, the amount of nitrogen dioxide after the accident was within permissible limits, according to the ministry.

This ministry has requested the Bosnian authorities to provide official information about the explosion and the fire in the Bosanski Brod plant.
