Izetbegovic's grave was severely injured in the explosion.
"Our police officers are on the spot closely monitoring the investigation of the local police and the state prosecutor, offering advice and assistance. This is a serious incident that does not contribute to the overall security situation in BiH. EUPM officers will be attending all meetings on all levels in relation to this investigation. I call upon everybody, including media, to refrain from speculations and from jumping to conclusions, as this will certainly not help the investigation, but would only create disruptions," Coppola said.
EUPM is confident that the local police are doing its utmost to identify the perpetrators. More information about the investigation will be coming from the state prosecutor"s office, as the institution leading the investigation, in the course of the day.
Many political parties harshly condemned the desecration of Izetbegovic's grave, describing the incedent as an attack on peace and stability of the entire counry.
Bosnian Serb entity officials also condemned the incident ,however, some politicians had rather unusual comments.
A vice president of the Party of Democratic Progress (PDP), Zoran Djeric, said in Banja Luka that he could not help himself but to think that this was aimed at "re-directing attention from revealing the truth about the suffering of the Serb people in Bosnia-Herzegovina".
Ealier today, the Prosecutor's Office of Bosnia-Herzegovina said that the explosive device that went off early Friday morning severely damaged the grave of the late Bosnian president Alija Izetbegovic. leaving a 70 centimetres deep crater and damaging monuments on the graves in the the immediate vicinity. According to available information, Izetbegovic's remains have not been damaged.
Prosecutor Miroslav Markovic told reporters it was being assumed that the motive behind the attack was of a political nature, but that further investigation needed to confirm the speculation.
The head of the Agency for Investigations and Protection (SIPA), Sredoje Novic, whose arrival at the scene attached additional importance to the attack Izetbegovic's grave, said this act of terrorism was inhumane.
The Interior Ministry of the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Mevludin Halilovic said additional security measures would be introduced across the country.
The Chairman of the Bosnian collective Presidency, Sulejman Tihic, said in a statement this was an act of terrorism and crime and an attempt to destabilise the situation in the country.
The international community's High Representative for Bosnia-Herzegovina, Christian Schwartz Schilling also visited the crime scene and harshly condemned the the attack. His office issued a statement expressing an outrage and sadness. Stressing that Izetbegovic was an exceptional person in difficult times, the High Representative said that Izetbegovic's memory still lived in the hearts of many.
Bosnian State Minister for Human Rights Mirsad Kebo said light would be shed on the case in the next three days. Bosnian Federation Prime Minister Ahmet Hadzipasic and the president of the Party for Bosnia-Herzegovina, Haris Silajdzic also condemned the attack on Izetbegovic's grave.
