BRUSSELS, July 14 (Hina) - Croatia must introduce European
statistical standards and methodology as soon as possible and it must meet all
requirements from this segment of entry negotiations before it joins the
European Union, as there are no transitional periods for this chapter, Croatian
negotiators said in Brussels on Friday where Croatian and European Commission
officials held a bilateral screening on the statistics chapter. The
comparability of figures is a requirement which we must meet, which means that
the same methodology and research methods applied by Eurostat, the statistical
office of the European Commission, should be applied by us, too, said Darko
Jukic, the chairman of the Croatian negotiating team for this chapter.
In the coming period Croatia is expected to increase funds for this
purpose by 30 to 40 percent.
Eurostat is willing to cooperate with the Croatian Bureau of Statistics
(DZS), and the EC can ensure some funds to help Croatia in these efforts.
According to assessments which the EC gave in its report on the
country's progress, Croatia has made some headway in this sector regarding
regional, macro-economic and agricultural statistics.
