ZAGREB, July 1 (Hina) - The Social Democratic Party (SDP) organised a a convention at Zagreb's Bundek Lake on Saturday about workers' rights and the position of workers in Croatia.

Party president Ivica Racan said the SDP had proved itself successful in the "liberalisation of socialism" adding that it was time to show that it could also "socilise capitalism"

He said the party wanted to offer Croatia changes, a socially responsible society in which workers were not treated as goods and in which work and solidarity were high on the social ladder.

The SDP will propose to parliament amendments to the Labour Act which would enable the "financial sanctioning" of employers who don't respect the law, the setting up of specialised court departments for labour and legal disputes and the adoption of a law against discrimination on the labour market, as well as a law on stress and mobbing, the party president said.

Racan said the state must guarantee safe working conditions to workers, economic development and new jobs.

The event pooled some 400 party members.
