SARAJEVO, June 29 (Hina) - Serbian President Boris Tadic in Sarjevo on Thursday advocated the "de-Balkanisation" of the region, expressing conviction that today's generation had more strength and opportunities to build entirely new relations among neighbouring countries, based on mutual respect.

"Today's generation in the Balkans can make this significant step forward," Tadic told a news conference held after his talks with members of the Bosnian collective presidency.

The Serbian president and Bosnian officials talked about bilateral relations and the situation in the region. Tadic stressed the importance of building stronger infrastructure connecting Zagreb, Sarajevo and Belgrade.

During his stay in Sarajevo, Tadic once again firmly dismissed claims that he had tried to propose to Croatian President Stjepan Mesic a deal on dividing Bosnia.

"In Croatia we didn't even have time to talk about Bosnia," Tadic told a reporter from Dnevni Avaz, the daily that reported about the alleged confidential talks between Tadic and Mesic.

Asked directly about his opinion on a possible referendum in the Bosnian Serb entity regarding its separation from Bosnia, Tadic said something like that was "practically impossible" given the status of former Yugoslav republics that was also confirmed by the Badinter Commission.

"Serbia does not want to bring into question the issue of the border between Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina in any way, and I don't want to see any kind of a political or economic destruction in Bosnia. Serbia is vitally interested in the best possible relations among all three peoples of Bosnia-Herzegovina," Tadic said.

He also called on the neighbours to show understanding towards Serbia's expectations regarding Kosovo's status. " We expect the neighbouring countries and their politicians to take into account the difficulties Serbia is faced withm" Tadic said, adding he very much respect Bosnia's position regarding that matter.

The chairman of Bosnia's collective presidency, Sulejamn Tihic confirmed that Bosnia wanted the issue of Kosovo to be settled through dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina.

The two presidents also stressed the importance of punishing all war criminals.

The two countries could still not agree on a suit that Bosnia had launched against the former Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia, namely against Serbia and Montenegro, for aggression and genocide.

Tihic said it was definitely impossible to reach a consensus about that, while Tadic said that the suit only complicated the two countries' relations, adding that there were other ways to solve such issues.
