ZAGREB, June 23 (Hina) - Activists of the Autonomous Women's House from Zagreb held a rally in front of the Justice Ministry headquarters in Zagreb on Friday, demanding that the authorities start protecting victims of domestic violence.

Some 50 women staged the rally after a 25-year-old woman was killed by her husband in front of a child home in Zagreb where she came to visit her two-year-old son. The man committed suicide afterwards.

The protesters claim that competent institutions treated the man, who had a police record for violence, and his wife in the same way.

Assistant Justice Minister Stefica Staznik, who met with the protesters, said the ministry intended to start a systematic education of judges and state prosecutors with the aim of improving their work.

The president of the Autonomous Women's House, Neva Tolle, warned that round table discussions on domestic violence and education courses were being organised but that women were still being abused and killed. She urged competent bodies to start treating domestic violence as a crime rather than as an offence.

The Autonomous Women's House also urged establishing the responsibility of the Social Welfare Centre and the Municipal Court in Ivanic Grad near Zagreb, which were in charge of the case of the woman killed last week.
