This date is one of the watershed dates in Croatia's recent history and its path to independence and sovereignty, and it is celebrated as Statehood Day.
On 25 June 1991 the Parliament also passed a declaration on sovereignty and independence.
The adoption of those documents was preceded by a referendum, held in May the same year, at which more than 94 percent of voters voted against Croatia's staying part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
The Constitutional Decision did not take effect immediately due to pressure from the international community and was postponed for three months by the Brijuni Declaration.
Upon the expiry of the moratorium, on 8 October 1991, Croatia severed all constitutional ties with the other Yugoslav republics, becoming a free and independent state.
