The Italian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that in the spirit of the European Union's common decision, D'Alema, who is also deputy prime minister, with the letter formalised Italy's recognition of Montenegro.
The statement highlighted Italy's intention to establish full diplomatic relations between Rome and Podgorica.
Italy has a General Consulate in Podgorica and the consul general will be appointed charge d'affaires.
In his letter, D'Alema underlined the Italian government's intention to further intensify relations with Podgorica in areas of common interest.
