"Violence and intolerance cannot be part of our society. As Catholics and journalists we must raise our voice and defend all who are insulted, disparaged or whose security and safety is exposed to threats," the association's steering board said in a press release on Thursday.
It recalls that the Catholic Church has always advocated tolerance and quoted Pope John Paul II as having said that "Jews are (Christians') older brothers in faith".
In the press release, the HKDN also stressed that it could not be indifferent to press articles which insulted Christian values.
In this context it mentioned the journal for culture and social events 'Zarez', which, it said, disparaged the Virgin Mary in its issue of 18 May in an unacceptable manner.
The rabbi was attacked by skinheads in downtown Zagreb last weekend.
