BELGRADE, May 31 (Hina) - The Serbian government decided that
after Wednesday's decision by the chairman of the Montenegrin Referendum
Commission, Frantisek Lipka, confirming the result of the recent referendum on
Montenegro's independence, Serbia would maintain the political and legal
continuity of the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro and become its
successor. So far, this is the only official reaction from Belgrade to the
referendum result. The Serbian government also stated that it would
soon additionally clarify its position.
Serbian President Boris Tadic and his Democratic Party have already
recognised the preliminary results of the referendum with Tadic's recent visit
to Montenegro. The G17 Plus party of Finance Minister Mladjan Dinkic and the
Serbian Renewal Movement of Serbia and Montenegro Foreign Minister Vuk
Draskovic on Wednesday issued statements saying that the referendum result,
showing 55.5 percent support for Montenegro's independence, should be
accepted.
But a spokesperson for the Democratic Party of Serbia of Serbian Prime
Minister Vojislav Kostunica said today that the Serbian government, rather than
political parties, should give a comment and position on the final results of
the Montenegrin referendum.
