ZAGREB, May 31 (Hina) - The Croatian government on Wednesday put
forward amendments to the Criminal Code, under which crimes of defamation and
dissemination of personal or family-related information that might damage a
person's honour or reputation should no longer be subject to a prison term but
to a fine. The government proposed that a crime of defamation should
carry a fine of up 100 daily earnings, and if committed through the media or
at a public gathering, a fine of up to 150 daily earnings should be imposed.
Under the present law, such a crime carries the same fine or a prison term of
up to six months.
The amendments also proposed that the statute of limitations for crimes
committed against children or minors should start to run from the day they
attain the age of majority.
