BELGRADE, May 26 (Hina) - Serbian President Boris Tadic said on Friday that after the formal separation from Montenegro, he would become the supreme commander of the Serbian army, because "the Serbian Constitution orders so".

The Constitution is clear with regard to that, Tadic told the press after a military exercise near Cacak. He said the Supreme Defence Council, which now commands the Army of Serbia and Montenegro, would cease existing when the state union ceased to exist.

The existing defence strategy will continue to be applied in Serbia, Tadic said.

He went on to say that people in Serbia felt "a little betrayed" following Sunday's referendum at which Montenegro opted for independence, but added that it was necessary to focus on Serbia and develop the best possible relations with Montenegro.

Tadic said he would advocate enabling professional army members who are citizens of Montenegro to remain in the army if they wanted.

Some Serbian media speculated recently that following Montenegro's final disassociation from the state union with Serbia, the Supreme Defence Council, which is not envisaged in the 1990 Serbian Constitution, would continue to exist. Under the Constitution passed during the regime of former President Slobodan Milosevic, the supreme commander of the armed forces is the president of state.
