Croatia has also managed to obtain 500 more bilateral permits and 5,000 permits for the transport of construction material.
The 16,000 international transit permits are valid until the end of the year, said Assistant Minister for Road Transport Igor Maly, who signed the protocol on Croatia's behalf.
He underlined that the increased number of permits was part of the contingent for next year so this does not represent a one-off assistance to Croatian road hauliers.
Maly said the increase was obtained after four years of refusals from the Austrian side because of high ecological standards.
The mixed road transport commission today also established a temporary contingent of permits for 2007, which amounts to 42,000.
It was said that an attempt would be made to increase the number of permits next year in keeping with Croatian hauliers' demands.
