ZAGREB, April 21 (Hina) - The Social Democratic Party (SDP) leader Ivica Racan has expressed satisfaction with the results of recent early local elections and the success of post-election negotiations on the establishment of new authorities in the town of Velika Gorica and Dubrovnik-Neretva County.

Racan said on Friday that "some media do not know how to interpret the (SDP's) success and are trying to bring it into question".

The SDP chief said that his party was aware of problems in Dubrovnik-Neretva County where the SDP and the Croatian People's Party (HNS) had agreed to form a coalition with controversial businessman Stipe Gabric Jambo.

In this context he said that the SDP refused to classify tycoons and controversial businessmen according to their political orientation.

Racan said that he was not surprised by the agreement reached between the SDP and the HNS and the Democratic Centre (DC) on forming the local government in Velika Gorica.

Commenting on the situation in Pozega-Slavonia County, where SDP official Zdravko Ronko and the SDP list clinched a landslide victory at the early elections, Racan said that he supported Ronko's move to show that the county had incurred huge debts in the previous period when it was led by the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ).

Racan said that he would insist on the accountability of those who left the high debts,

Prime Minister Ivo Sanader on Friday declined to comment on the post-election developments in Velika Gorica, reiterating that post-electoral agreements were a subject of talks between local branches of political parties. He added that he would like to see other political parties treating the issue this way.

The SDP-HNS-DC agreement means that the HDZ would be an opposition party in that town south of Zagreb.

Commenting on media speculation that Croatia might sign a bilateral agreement with the United States on the non-extradition of US citizens to the International Criminal Court, SDP chief Racan told the news conference that his party insisted that such an agreement be refused.
