SARAJEVO, March 25 (Hina) - An estimated 19 per cent of households
in Bosnia-Herzegovina possess small arms and light weapons, and 16 per cent
possess these weapons illegally, according to a survey conducted by the United
Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Uncontrolled possession of
small arms poses a serious threat to security in any community, inciting
conflicts, crime and violence. This problem, which is particularly prominent in
Bosnia-Herzegovina, is a legacy of the 1992-1995 war as evidenced by large
amounts of surplus weapons declared by the Bosnian armed forces.
In June 2004, the Bosnian armed forces declared a surplus of 370,000
pieces of small arms and light weapons and 33,500 tons of ammunition, the UNDP
said.
