VELJUN, March 24 (Hina) - The authorities in Veljun near Karlovac,
some 50 kilometres southwest of Zagreb, have been given back 14 metal plaques
stolen a few days ago from a monument to victims of fascism and will claim
money needed to repair the monument from the perpetrators, the head of the
Veljun Local Committee, Mileta Stipic, said on Friday. Stipic said
the local authorities would demand that the perpetrators pay repair works
because they did not have money, and that the monument should be repaired until
a commemoration scheduled for May 6.
He added that the authorities in the nearby town of Slunj would not
give the authorities in Veljun money to repair the monument because as a
representative of the Independent Democratic Serb Party (SDSS) he was unable to
establish cooperation with the Slunj town leadership.
Plaques with the names of victims of fascism were stolen from the
monument in Veljun on March 19 by two residents of Karlovac who intended to
sell them as secondary raw material.
