VELJUN, March 21 (Hina) - Unidentified persons on Sunday
vandalised a monument erected in memory of victims of fascism in Veljun near
Karlovac, some 50 kilometres south of Zagreb, Karlovac County Police department
spokesman Tomislav Kotic told the press on Tuesday evening. The
vandals stole 14 metal plaques bearing the victims' names.
Condemning the incident, the head of the county association of
anti-fascist fighters, Martin Jandrasec, said that most anti-fascist monuments
in the county had been vandalised, but that nobody had been called to account
so far.
The monument in Veljun was erected in memory of 525 civilians who were
killed in 1941 in line with racist laws of the Independent State of Croatia
(NDH), only because they were Serbs, Jandrasec said.
