EU urges Serbia to extradite Karadzic and Mladic

BRUSSELS, March 20 (Hina) - The European Union on Monday reiterated theurgent need for Serbia and Montenegro to take decisive action toensure that all remaining fugitive ICTY indictees, notably RadovanKaradzic and Ratko Mladic, are brought to justice. because fullcooperation with the ICTY remains a condition for the continuation ofnegotiations on the country's Stabilisation and Association Agreementwith the bloc.
BRUSSELS, March 20 (Hina) - The European Union on Monday reiterated the urgent need for Serbia and Montenegro to take decisive action to ensure that all remaining fugitive ICTY indictees, notably Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic, are brought to justice. because full cooperation with the ICTY remains a condition for the continuation of negotiations on the country's Stabilisation and Association Agreement with the bloc.

"Full cooperation with the ICTY is necessary to achieve lasting reconciliation in the region as well an international obligation and a requirement to move closer toward the European Union," the EU said in its conclusions on the Western Balkans.

The Council also expressed its strong support for the Serbian people in their quest to come to terms with the legacy of the Slobodan Milosevic regime. This will help them in moving forward towards the family of the European nations, where they belong.

The Council also tackled Bosnia-Herzegovina in its conclusions.

"The Council welcomed the political agreement reached on 18 March 2006 on constitutional reform. The agreement constitutesa significant step forward towards making Bosnia-Herzegovina's state institutions more functional and better able to meet European standards," the conclusions stated.

The Council also welcomed progress Bosnia made in the negotiations on the country's Stabilisation and Association Agreement adding that the pace of conclusion the negotiations would depend in particular on Bosnia's progress in developing its legislative framework and administrative capacity, in implementing police reform, adopting and implementing all necessary public broadcasting legislation and achieving full cooperation with the ICTY.
