BELGRADE, March 12 (Hina) - Memorial ceremonies were held in Belgrade on Sunday to mark the third anniversary of the death of Serbian prime minister Zoran Djindjic, who was assassinated in the courtyard of the main government building on 12 March 2003.

Delegations of the current government, headed by Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica, and the former government headed by Djindjic's successor Zoran Zivkovic laid wreaths at the murder site. Wreaths were also laid at Djindjic's grave in Belgrade's New Cemetery, where numerous citizens brought flowers and lit candles during the day.

Djindjic's Democratic Party organised a commemorative gathering at the Sava Convention Centre where a short documentary film about Djindjic's life was shown and his statements, made between 1991 and 2003, were read. Attending were some of the ministers of the present government and most of the ministers from the Djindjic government.

Thirteen members of a notorious criminal gang known as "The Zemun Clan" and of a police special operations unit are currently on trial in Belgrade in connection with the assassination, including unit commander Milorad Ulemek aka Legija and unit member Zvezdan Jovanovic, who shot Djindjic dead with a sniper rifle and wounded his bodyguard.
