At Dodik's urging, the Republika Srpska parliament on January 28 gave a no confidence vote in the government led by Pero Bukejlovic of the Serb Democratic Party (SDS).
Forty-six out of a total of 83 members of parliament voted for electing Dodik the new prime minister and 45 for the new government. Voting was boycotted by Serb national parties with the SDS at the helm.
Dodik formed a multinational government which, in accordance with the entity's Constitution, has eight Serb, five Muslim and three Croat ministers.
Before the voting, Dodik announced, among other things, that his government would crack down on organised crime and corruption, advance regional cooperation with Croatia and Serbia-Montenegro, and meet commitments toward the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague.
At the start of the parliament session, speaker Dusan Stojickic of the SDS tendered his resignation, after which the deputies elected Igor Radojicic of the SNSD as his successor. SDS deputies tried to contest Radojicic's appointment because he declares himself as Montenegrin.
