The suspects are five of eight former military police officers whom the Split County Court two weeks ago sentenced to prison pending appeal for crimes committed against civilians imprisoned at Lora in 1992.
The former military police were sentenced to prison sentences ranging from six to eight years.
Most of the witnesses from Belgrade, who are former members of Serb paramilitary units from Croatia and the former Yugoslav People's Army, testified in the trial about the abuse and killing of two male civilians at Lora. In statements to the press and letters to the Split County Prosecutor's Office they claimed to have been subjected, as prisoners of war, to various forms of physical and mental abuse at Lora.
Deputy Prosecutor Squiccimarro, who has been in Belgrade since March 6, is expected to interview the witnesses about the abuse they were subjected to and the killing of three POWs at Lora in 1992.
After all witnesses are interviewed, the prosecution expects to have enough elements to issue another indictment, this time for war crimes against prisoners of war and violations of the laws of war, against the prison's former head, Tomislav Duic, his deputy Tonci Vrkic, and prison guards Emilijo Bungur, Ante Gudic and Andjelko Botic.
