SARAJEVO, March 3 (Hina) - European parliamentarian Hannes Swoboda has said it is high time to abolish stringent visa regimes for citizens of western Balkan countries, notably of Bosnia-Herzegovina, adding that he is confident that a majority of European Union members are ready for such a step.

Presenting a study on Bosnia-Herzegovina's preparedness for the abolishment of EU visa requirements, which has been drawn up by the Centre for European Integration Strategies (CEIS), Swoboda said in Sarajevo on Friday that many in Europe did not know enough about the situation in Bosnia and in the region and that many obtained incorrect impressions based on mainly negative media reports.

"Communication (with the EU) is not important only to Bosnia but also to the EU," said Swoboda, who is on the steering board of the Geneva-based nongovernmental organisation.

Liberalisation of the visa regime between the EU and Bosnia-Herzegovina should be on the agenda of an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers who will convene in Salzburg next week.

The international community's High Representative to Sarajevo, Christian Schwarz-Schilling, has said that he will also insist on raising this question in European circles and institutions.

Bosnians can travel without visas only to neighbouring countries, Tunisia, or some Pacific islands.

According to the CEIS study, the reasons for abolishing visa requirements for Bosnians are improvements in the system of issuing documents and passports, security services' increasingly better performance, and the fact that Bosnian authorities behaved in the same way as Western countries in the fight against terrorist perils.
