The Serbian government stated that conditions had not been met for the Serbian population in Kosovo to participate in the elections.
The acting Kosovo President, Jakup Krasniqi, has called early elections for 12 December after the passage of a no-confidence vote in the cabinet led by Hashim Thaci and the subsequent dissolution of the parliament in Pristina.
The no-confidence vote was adopted after the ruling coalition ceased to exist with the departure of the LDK party members from the government. They left after the constitutional court decided that LDK leader Fatmir Sejdiu breached the constitution by simultaneously holding the office of president of this youngest European state and of president of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK). The ruling made Sejdiu step down as country president in mid-September.
