Serbia bans smoking in enclosed public spaces, public transportation

Autor: mses
BELGRADE, Nov 10 (Hina) - The ban on smoking in enclosed public spaces, public transportation and at workplaces in Serbia goes into effect on Thursday, after legislation on the protection of population from exposure to tobacco smoke was adopted in early May.

Individuals face penalties of approximately 50 euros for the violation of ban, while companies and institutions may be fined between EUR 4,700-9,400 in the event of the disrespect for the ban.

Cafes and bars larger than 80 square metres can allow smoking in a half of their space, while smaller bars and cafes have to opt to be either for smokers or nonsmokers.

One third of the Serbians are smokers. Annually, 16,000 die of the consequences of tobacco use, the health ministry said on its web site.
