Int'l conference on gender equality held in Zagreb

Autor: mses
ZAGREB, Nov 5 (Hina) - Despite legislation providing for gender equality, women in Croatia are still discriminated against and the share of women deputies in the national parliament stagnates at some 20 percent, an international conference on women in politics heard in Zagreb on Friday.

The day-long conference was organised by the Centre for Education, Counselling and Research (CESI) with the support of the French Embassy in Zagreb with the aim of encouraging women to take part in political decision-making.

The conference also heard that women were particularly discriminated against on the labour market.

French Ambassador Jerome Pasquier and the French Senate women's rights delegation head, Michele Andre, spoke about the representation of women in the French parliament. Women's suffrage was granted in France in 1944. Women in the lower house of the French parliament account now for 18 percent of MPs, and they hold 23 percent of seats in the upper house.
