Religious communities back fact-finding commission, only Serb Orthodox Church cautious

Autor: mses
SARAJEVO, Nov 4 (Hina) - Christian churches and other religious communities in countries of the former Yugoslavia mainly support the initiative to establish a regional fact-finding commission on victims of the wars of the 1990s, with only the Serb Orthodox Church expressing some reservations.

The regional commission REKOM should be set up by 1 June 2011 and should have offices in all countries participating in the initiative.

The coalition for REKOM discussed the initiative with religious dignitaries in Sarajevo on Thursday.

Representatives of the Catholic Church in Vojvodina and Bosnia and Herzegovina, Andrija Kopilovic and Mato Zovkic, expressed support for this idea.

Kopilovic said that the support from religious communities for the initiative was logical considering the values the religious communities and this initiative share.

Zovkic said that he fully supported setting up a fact-finding commission.

Speaking on behalf of the Islamic community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo Mufti Husein Smajic, said that "the Islamic Community will participate in initiatives such as REKOM provided that truth and justice are respected."

Mufti Smajic said that this implied the recognition of genocide that was committed against Bosnian Muslims, bringing to justice the remaining Serb war crimes fugitives Ratko Mladic and Goran Hadzic, and war reparations.

Speaking on behalf of the Serb Orthodox Church, theologian Bosko Tosovic said that the Serb Orthodox Church was cautious regarding this initiative.

Serb dignitary in Sarajevo, Vanja Jovanovic, said that first every country should set up its own fact-finding agency before making analyses at the regional level.

Representatives of the Jewish communities and Protestant associations from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia also took part in the discussion.
