ROME, Feb 10 (Hina) - Members of the Italian minority in Croatia
and Slovenia will be able to qualify for Italian citizenship in compliance with
the amended Citizenship Law which was adopted by the Italian Parliament's
lower house in mid-2005 and approved by the Senate on Friday, a day before the
parliament will be dissolved ahead of new parliamentary elections.
The minister in charge of relations with the parliament, Carlo Giovanardi, said
in a press release that this had to be done for the Italian minority in
Slovenia and Croatia that had waited for recognition by their motherland for a
long time.
Italians in Istria, Dalmatia and the city of Rijeka can thus better
protect their national identity in the context of sincere friendship and
cooperation with Slovenia and Croatia, the minister said.
