PRISTINA, Feb 9 (Hina) - Serbs from several municipalities in Kosovo on Thursday held peaceful protests following reports that a decision has already been made to grant independence to the UN-administered province.

Protest rallies were held in the northern part of Mitrovica, Gracanica near Pristina, Strbac in southern Kosovo, and other smaller places. The rallies were held under the slogan "Independent Kosovo - A Jail for Serbs", the Serbian Coordination Centre for Kosovo, headed by Sanda Raskovic-Ivic, reported.

The protest rallies were organised by Serbian NGOs and independent civic associations. There were no reports of incidents during the protests, according to available information.

Earlier this week the media cited a Serb representative at talks with the political director of Britain's Foreign Office, John Sawers, as saying that the contact group for Kosovo had already decided to grant Kosovo independence. In an interview with Radio B92 on Wednesday, Sawers denied having told Kosovo Serbs in Pristina on Monday that the contact group had already decided to grant Kosovo independence, but warned about the limited number of options for Kosovo's status that were being considered. He said that there could be no restoration of the situation as it was before 1999, or division of Kosovo or its unification with a neighbouring country.

Kosovo's independence is the price which Serbia has to pay for the mistakes of the Slobodan Milosevic regime, Sawers said.
