The decision was unanimously reached at a session of the DSK presidency on Tuesday and sent to the Kosovo Assembly to be included on the agenda of the next session, scheduled for 9 February.
The nomination has been supported by the DSK's main coalition partner, the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo, and many other political parties, as well as by the European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, Javier Solana, and the head of the United States Office in Pristina, Philip Goldberg.
According to reports by Albanian-language media in Pristina, the leading opposition party, the Democratic Party of Kosovo, which is headed by former political leader of the now defunct Kosovo Liberation Army Hashim Thaqi, is also preparing to field its presidential candidate. Former Premier Bajram Rexhepi and senior party official Enver Hoxhaj are mentioned as potential candidates.
