ZAGREB, Jan 28 (Hina) - A Croatian court has made a historic
decision to sentence a man to five months in prison for torturing
pets.
The municipal court in Vrbovec on Friday gave a five-month
unsuspended prison sentences to Ostoja Babic who beat his dog to death in late
2004.
"I am a big animal lover, it happened because the dog was
howling," said Babic, whom the media called the Pescenica Monster after he beat
to death his one and a half year old dog with an iron bar.
"This is
the first time that a pet abuser has been convicted in Croatia. Four years ago,
a man who massacred his neighbour's cow was sentenced to five months in
prison," judge Jasna Zoretic, who delivered the verdict against Babic, told
Hina.
Babic said he consciously decided to kill the dog "because she
was good for nothing", given that she was happy to see people walking by the
house and waved her tale, but she would yelped when he tied her down. The
Pescenica Monster expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that he had to come
to court for hearings.
