Croatian central bank cautions against counterfeit banknotes on rise

ZAGREB, Jan 21 (Hina) - In the second half of 2005, the Croatian police detected a total of 2,897 counterfeit banknotes, which was a 57.7 climb in comparison to detected cases of forged money in Croatia in the first half of the last year.

According to a report on forged money which the Croatian National Bank (HNB) released recently on its web site, the number of counterfeit kuna banknotes found in circulation climbed by 105.7 percent in 2005 as against 2004.

Last year, the police detected 4,734 fake banknotes, while in 2004, there were 2,301 detected counterfeit banknotes.

At the end of December 109.8 million banknotes were in circulation with the ratio of 26 detected counterfeit banknotes to every million of banknotes in the 2005 July-December, the HNB reported.

In 99 percent of cases, fake banknotes were produced by digital colour scanners and printers.

200 kuna banknotes ( i.e. 1.357 detected pieces) accounted for almost 47 percent of detected forged money.

Banknotes in denomination of 100 kuna followed with 21 percent share in forged money.

For instance, the police established that forgers had produced 498 banknotes in denomination of 500 kuna and 154 pieces of fake 1000 kuna in the July-December period.
