ZAGREB, July 27 (Hina) - A total of 878 forest fires were registered in Croatia from July 1 to 26, or 11.7 per cent fewer than in the same period last year, while in the first half of this year there were 19.5 per cent more fires than
in the first six months of 2006, the police said on Friday.

same period last year, while in the first half of this year there were 19.5 per
cent more fires than in the first six months of 2006, the police said on
Friday. In the first half of this year, 4,122 fires were reported,
or 673 more than in the same period of 2006. The fires caused HRK 126.5 million
in property damage, which was 117 per cent higher than last year, when it was
estimated at HRK 58.3 million.
A total of 35,877 hectares of land was burned, as against 11,741
hectares last year.
This month, one person was killed and seven were wounded as a result of
forest fires, while property damage was estimated at HRK 18 million.
The police said fires were most often caused by residents, farmers, and
holiday makers.
