Investigating judge Ljubica Magdalenic set one-month detention for Paurevic today and will interrogate him again and launch an investigation tomorrow, his attorney said on Thursday.
Paurevic was placed in custody because he might try to escape and tamper with witnesses.
Police stopped Paurevic on a highway near Ivanic Grad, a town near Zagreb, on Sunday evening due to suspicious licence plates, establishing that the Mercedes he was driving had been stolen and that the licence and registration documents and insurance policy he submitted were for another car.
In his first court appearance, the former consul denied the charges, saying he had borrowed the car from a friend, not knowing that it had been stolen. He also denied having stolen the car keys in Slovenia, returned to pick it up the next day and put Italian plates on it.
After it was reported that a diplomat had been arrested and escorted to an investigating judge for theft and forgery, the Croatian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration annulled Paurevic's work contract.
