The service was attended, among others, by Parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks, Prime Minister Ivo Sanader, his deputies and government ministers.
In his sermon, the cardinal expressed concern about the growing violence in society.
"I consider it important to warn about that reality whose origins are not being studied enough and consequences not being removed, and which does not affect only state bodies, but the beliefs of every citizen," Bozanic said.
Speaking about the causes of violence, Bozanic cited self-interest, choosing the wrong criteria, and extolling frivolity.
The cardinal also noted that a frequent target of violence were Christians and their values.
"The state is obligated to guarantee respect in the public sphere and insulting other people's religious and other feelings must not become a way of conduct. Art, culture and science that insult cannot be acceptable and negate themselves," Bozanic said.
