BELGRADE, June 21 (Hina) - Witness Petar Ciric, a former member of the Territorial Defence (TO) in the eastern Croatian town of Vukovar, confirmed at Belgrade's Special War Crimes Court on Thursday that Miroljub Vujovic, principal indictee in the trial for the 1991 massacre of 200 prisoners of war at Ovcara near Vukovar, had been appointed to the post of TO commander.

Vujovic claimed in his defence that during the siege of Vukovar the TO did not exist and that he was appointed its commander only on 28 November 1991, a week after prisoners from the Vukovar Hospital were killed at Ovcara.

The Serbian Supreme Court requested that exactly this fact be established when last year it quashed a verdict convicting Vujovic and 13 other indictees of the crime and acquitting two.

One more witnesses was to have appeared in court today, but he decided against it after receiving serious threats, defence counsel said.

Seventeen members of TO Vukovar and the paramilitary unit "Leva supoderica" were indicted by the Special War Crimes Court for war crimes committed at Ovcara in 1991. A re-trial started in spring this year, after the Supreme Court quashed the verdict of the trial court which convicted 14 of 16 indictees of the crime.

The trial will continue on September 2.
