BRATISLAVA, May 26 (Hina) - Croatian Parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks has said that European Union membership in no way undermines national identity and that this membership is actually the uniting on an equal footing of all characteristics that countries-members and their nationals bring in with the entry into the European Union.

Addressing a conference of parliamentary speakers of EU members and countries-candidates in the Slovak capital of Bratislava, Seks said on Saturday that the full membership of the European bloc can be perceived as an opportunity for stronger promotion of Croatia's political and cultural authenticity.

Croatia has been participating in the summit meeting of EU members' parliaments presidents since 2005 when it was granted the status of membership candidate.

Speaking about raising European national awareness, Seks said that Croatia saw in the European Union a political association that recognised and respected diversity and difference of identities of all its members.

This subject was also a topic of talks delivered by European Parliament Vice President Miguel dos Santos and the EU Finance and Customs Commissioner Laszlo Kovacz at the second day of the Bratislava meeting.

To make citizens aware of the fact that integration is beneficial for them it is necessary to strengthen the role of national parliaments in the communications strategy and to render European institutions more transparent, democratic and efficient, and all of this requires institutional reforms, dos Santos said.
