WASHINGTON, May 21 (Hina) - US President George W. Bush and NATO
Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Schafer on Monday sent a message to countries
that expect to receive an invitation for NATO membership at a summit in
Bucharest in the spring of 2008, including Croatia, underlining that they must
implement additions reforms and meet all conditions to be able to join
NATO. They also promised to assist them on the way to NATO.
Apart from Croatia, the most obvious candidates for NATO membership at
the next enlargement round are Macedonia and Albania. All three countries are
members of the US-Adriatic Charter.
The US also advocates the admission of the former Soviet republics of
Georgia and Ukraine.
